AI-tools in the booth and cognitive load: KCTI Research Corner

KCTI research corner

On 22 April the KCTI Research Corner had the pleasure to host Prof. dr. Bart Defranq and Ms. Ana-Maria Pleșca from the Ghent University for a presentation about the results of their research project which was co-financed by DG SCIC.

One year ago, 12 brave SCIC interpreters lent their brain, ears and eyes to science, participating in a study on how AI-based support tools impact interpreters in the booth.

As the speakers pointed out, the primary goal of the research was to “evaluate the usability of computer-assisted tools such as automatic speech recognition and extraction, […] and understand the cognitive impact of these tools on interpreters”. Specifically, the study sought to measure the cognitive load on interpreters when working in the booth with these tools, compared to when they are not available. During the well-attended session, the research team unveiled the (almost) final results and gave us a glimpse into the fascinating world of gaze behaviour, brain signals, frequency bands and acoustic variables.
