On 19 May a ‘babel’ of translation professionals from EMT universities around Europe, along with representatives from DGT, arrived at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland for the annual onsite meeting of the EMT network.
Many different subjects were covered in just one and half days, presented by UCC professors, EMT representatives and DGT staff. From the evolution of the Irish language, accessibility and minoritised languages to the use of microcredentials by universities and the Skills Portability Initiative, the current update to the EMT competence framework and the contribution by EMT professors to our very own KCTI. There was also a roundtable discussion on the groundbreaking EU-MMLU project (EU-oriented Massive Multitask Language Understanding) between DGT and EMT, in which students translate benchmarking datasets to evaluate large language models (LLMs) in EU official languages with the aim of addressing the current lack of high-quality, multilingual benchmarking datasets for LLMs.
During the event, the motto of the European Union, United in Diversity, seemed to echo through the historic campus of UCC; diversity of languages, needs, opinions and cultures. Together we are stronger, together we can empower excellence and navigate change.
