EU institutions and Europe need language data and innovation to transform and thrive

On 20 March, in Luxembourg, the Director-General of the European Commission’s DG Translation (DGT), Mr Christos Ellinides addressed the EU Open Data Days event hosted by the Publications Office.
He discussed how DGT is helping modernise EU institutions and EU public administrations by sharing data and offering innovative AI-based tools.
Public administrations, SMEs, NGOs and academia can also use Commission’s AI-based multilingual services, therefore benefiting the wider public. In addition, Mr Ellinides presented the brand new AI-based services ‘WebText’ and ‘Accessible Text’, which will enable simpler texts to be provided on the web and elsewhere.
He also emphasised the need for European digital and technical sovereignty. Key to achieving this are European language data space, which acts a European marketplace for language data.
