Practical material for Interpreter Trainers

Dear Interpreter Trainers,

I thought of creating the Interpreter training Community or rather a platform where we could share our practical tools on interpreter training. We could start on putting our knowledge together and then once we have enough material, produce a link to it on Training for Trainers section.

My idea is to have practical exercises for: Early days (memory exsercises), Introduction into note-taking, Beginner note-taking, Intermediate Consec, Advanced Consec, Intro into SIM, beginer SIM, intermediate and Advanced SIM. We should not share speeches here but rather exercises and tools with a detailed description of the exercise (what it is intended to do and the description).

We’ve started a little speech repository that we encourage students, or anyone who would like to, to contribute to: https://campuspress.leeds.ac.uk/speechhub/

There is scope to add other languages (let me know if you have a particular interest in a certain language) but for now we cover EN, DE, ES, FR, PT, IT, RU, AR, and ZH.

If you’d like to be updated about new speeches, do sign up (see below)

The site is hosted and curated by The University of Leeds, as this offers us the necessary legal framework, support and resource to look after it. However, our objective is that this open education resource belongs to those who use and contribute to it, worldwide.

The idea behind the update service is to alert trainers of new speeches that might be both topical and adapted to the pedagogical needs of the different stages of an interpreting course. For example, we aim to add a few new "consec without notes" speeches in September/October.

Feel free to contribute a speech yourself. Instructions are on the site.

Simultaneous interpretation

I think simultaneous interpretation is the most challenging one because we must interpret while the speaker is talking to. In my case, I usually practice this skill regularly because I always find it hard (both direct and retour). But all of you might agree on that point. Dear Guillermo, thank you for your active contribution. I'm sure other students might have things to add, in which case I would suggest you ask a question like this on the forum - I'm sure you will get interesting feedback there. I see this community as one for interpreter trainers who will compile useful training material for all interpreting students at all stages, including exercises for simultaneous of course. In SCIC we believe the skills of interpreting can and should be broken down and practised separately - and that's what the kind of exercises gathered here will be aiming at. Consecutive skills should also be well developed before embarking on simultaneous. This way the challenges of simultaneous are more manageable. I hope that soon this compilation will appear on the 'static' part of the KCI and you will be able to benefit for your practice.

Dear Kathy, dear Mathew, my idea was to collect training material, exercises directly from the practising trainers, for both consec and sim. To put them in terms of levels of difficulty or progression, like in the speech repository, for ex: Consec no notes, Consec for beginners, Consec for Intermediate, Consec for Advanced. So, the trainers could post their exercises under each section. I have realised that before it got live, there were very few trainers that had access to it, so maybe now there will be more. I could think of a layout and send it over to the editorial team and then they can decide which section it should go to. Just to bear in mind that even though the initial idea is mine, to implement it, I need the input of the other trainers:)
