Biography
I am a certified signed language interpreter with the following working languages: International Sign, Dutch Sign Language (Sign Language of the Netherlands), American Sign Language, as well as spoken English, German, and Dutch.
In October 2023, I received my doctoral degree at the Radboud University with her dissertation “Practitioners’ perspectives on International Sign Conference Interpreting. I am the former coordinator of the AIIC Sign Language Network (2016-2023), former president of the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters (2006-2012), and a former board member of the European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association (2009-2012). In 2020 I was the course director for the European Commission’s first mentoring scheme for International Sign interpreters.
As of July 2023, I am the project leader of a to be developed ISO standard on technical requirements for signed language interpreting. In 2023 I was appointed by Mason Perkins Deafness Fund (MPDF) as their Course Director for the new post-graduate degree program Multilingual Sign Language Translation and Interpreting Studies (MITS). In addition, I deliver training and consultancy on topics such as sign language interpreting techniques for high-level settings, raising professional standards of sign language interpreters, and optimizing the collaboration between consumers and interpreters.
I am also the author of the publication “Sign Language Interpreting in Europe,” which has gone through six updated editions since the year 2000.
