T&I, AI, and the Language Industry: Aligning Research, Training and Professional Practice
Event description
Following the CIUTI 2025 Conference in Madrid, the CIUTI 2026 Conference at IULM University in Milan will examine the challenges and opportunities introduced by digital technologies and AI in translation and interpreting. The event will focus on their implications for training, research, professional practice, workflows, and evolving professional profiles. It will also continue the international tradition of CIUTI conferences as a forum for academic exchange.
About the CIUTI 2026 Conference
The CIUTI 2026 Conference, “Translation, Interpreting, AI, and the Language Industry: Research and Professional Practice” will take place at IULM University, Milan, on 19–20 May 2026. Building on discussions initiated at the 2025 Madrid conference, it maintains CIUTI’s commitment to dialogue between universities, professional communities, and the language industry. The conference will focus on technological innovation in translation and interpreting, with special attention to how AI is reshaping roles, workflows, and training pathways, and how research is responding to these evolutions.
Contributions from researchers and practitioners will explore both the potential and the limitations of advanced tools, with attention to the continuing importance of human expertise and to their impact on the language industry.
Thematic Overview
The conference is structured around two main strands: research and training on the one hand, and professional practice in the language industry on the other. Within this framework, contributions are invited on topics such as Translation and Interpreting Studies in the age of AI, interdisciplinary approaches, AI-supported methods and tools, hybrid workflows, curriculum design and the evolving profiles of translation and interpreting professionals. Panels and presentation sessions will also address programme profiles, employment trends, lifelong learning, external perceptions of the professions and quality assessment of new technologies, thereby extending the conversation beyond individual research papers. This broad thematic scope makes the conference particularly attractive both to established scholars and to early-career researchers, as well as to professionals interested in evidence-based innovation.
