The KCI team is particularly happy to announce our brand-new pilot project: “The Virtual Cafés of the KCI”.
So what is this all about?
The core mission of the KCI is to offer a single space to manage and exchange knowledge, create synergies and disseminate best practices on interpretation, and to connect communities with an interest in this area. Several initiatives, like the edit-a-thons that took place in previous years and the recent online workshop on Master’s theses in interpretation, have added an interactive, real-time dimension to the time-shifted exchanges already taking place in and around the various KCI communities. Each of these events focused on a specific subject and audience.
In the same vein, we are now launching a new pilot project called “The Virtual Cafés of the KCI”.
The virtual cafés will mainly (but not exclusively) be targeted at students, offering them the possibility of virtual exchanges among themselves, and with professional interpreters or other professionals in related fields (e.g. researchers), addressing particular topics of interest to them.
The first event is scheduled for next week, on 17th June from 2.30 to 4.30 pm. Marking, in particular, the end of the French Presidency of the EU, as well as the close cooperation with other very important entities in the interpretation world like the UN interpretation service, the focus will be on French interpretation: an interview and conversation with Ms Olga Markides, Head of the French Interpretation Section at the UN Office in Geneva, and Mr Pascal Mathieu, Head of the French Interpretation Unit in SCIC. They will be talking about subjects like their educational background, their career choice, interpreting for their respective institutions, career opportunities and the position of French at EU and international level.
Ms Genoveva Ruiz Calavera, SCIC’s Director General, will open this very first Virtual Café of the KCI with a welcome address.
The interview will be held in French, and SCIC interpreters will provide simultaneous interpretation into English, giving participants a very good opportunity to listen to the professional work of our colleagues.
