Augmented interpretation

In 2020, the UGent and the Johannes Gutenburg University Mainz received a research grant from DG SCIC for the Ergonomics for the Artificial Booth Mate (EABM) project. From December until now, the researchers worked on finishing three deliverables:

First, a survey to reach out to the international interpreting community and to find out what the ideal artificial booth mate (ABM) should look like. The EABM survey received over 500 responses from experienced interpreters worldwide! Second, an experiment with 22 professional SCIC interpreters to observe the interaction between the interpreter and an ABM system. Third, educational videos for interpreters to learn more about an ABM and how to use the system in the booth!

From 22 December 2020 to 29 March 2021, over 500 professional interpreters from all over the world participated in the Ergonomics for the Artificial Booth Mate survey and determined the features of their preferred artificial boothmate. Now the results are in! You can find them on the UGent website: www.eabm.ugent.be.

The Ergonomics for the Artificial Booth Mate (EABM) project has officially started! Together the University of Ghent and the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz will use speech recognition technology to create a user-friendly interpreting tool and enhance interpreting performance in the booth.

How?

Through an online assessment and survey among professional interpreters we will determine the ideal display formats and put them to the test. The outcome will be an efficient and user-friendly artificial booth mate created for interpreters by interpreters. All interested interpreters will be able to access free online course materials and webinars on the potential and the limitations of this new support system. In a series of videos we will go over how the system operates, what it can do for you and what the best practices are. This way you will be able to work together with your new artificial booth mate as efficiently as possible!
