Virtual classes

Online classes for interpreting students

Virtual classes are online training sessions that last between 2 and 2.5 hours. Organised by DG Interpretation, these classes are offered to universities with whom DG Interpretation cooperates. Staff interpreters, who have experience in training conference interpreters, lead these sessions as trainers and speakers.

History of the project

The project started around 2009, bringing together the European Commission, the European Parliament and a group of European universities. The virtual classes initially involved both institutions and groups of 3 universities.

Over time, each institution developed its own virtual class programme, with a focus on one-to-one virtual classes (1 EU institution and 1 partner university).

Class content

The modules currently on offer cover beginner to advanced consecutive and simultaneous practice, including retour interpretation, in the working languages of each group.

For simultaneous interpreting, virtual classes are provided remotely using the Interpreter Training Tool. This tool enables trainers to listen to 2 channels (interpretation and the original speech) through a single headset.
