Tips for speakers working with interpreters

How to communicate clearly in meetings and collaborate successfully with interpreters

Speak with impact

When you are given the floor, place the microphone directly in front of you, remove your earphones and place them well away from the microphone. Then switch it on. When speaking, keep the following points in mind:

  • speak your native language if possible
  • if you switch language, announce it clearly
  • speak naturally and at a reasonable pace
  • speaking is better than reading; if you must read, speak at a moderate pace and pause regularly
  • clearly pronounce numbers, names and acronyms
  • when referring to a document, clearly mention its reference number and page
  • if you read a speech, make sure the interpreters have the text
  • talk with the interpreters and give them feedback
