Institutional and legal translation

Institutional translation is translation work done in national and international public institutions. Documents are often translated into many different languages. Consistency is ensured by using institutional style guides and computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools.

Translators who work for public institutions deal mainly with legal documents, across a wide range of fields, including agriculture, employment and finance.

The European Commission’s DG for Translation is one of the world’s largest institutional translation bodies. It translates legislation covering all of the policy areas the Commission is active in, into and out of all the 24 official EU languages.
